Tat kasya hetoh? Yah Subhutia bodhisattvah pratisthitah danam dadati, tasya Subhutia punya-skandhasya na sukaram pramanam udgrahitum. Tat kim manyase? Subhutia sukaram purvasyam dis i akasasya pramanam udgrahitum?

Subhuir aha: nau hi idam bhagavan! Bhagavan aha: evam eva subhutia yah Subhutia bodhisattvah apratisthitah danam dadati, tasya Subhutia punya-skandhasya na sukaram pramanam udgrahitum.

evam hi subhutia bodhisattva asamprasthita-ina danam datavyam, yatha na nimitta-samjnayam api prasthitait. Tat kim manyase? Subhutia laksana sampada tathagatah drastavyah? Subhutir aha: nau hi idam bhagavan! na laksana-sampada tathagatah drastavyah. Tat kasya hetoh? ya sa bhagavan laksana-sampat-tathagata-ina bhasita, sa eva alaksnana-sampat. evam ukte, bhagavan ayusmantam subhutim etad avocat:

yavat subhutia laksana-sampad, tavat mrsa, yavat alaksana-sampat, tavat na mrsa. iti. hi laksnana alaksana tathagatah drastavyah.

Thus, Subhuti, a bodhisattva should give alms without being attached, without being attached to any sign. What do you think, Subhuti? Can the Tathagata be seen by the possession of marks? Subhuti replied: "No, Blessed One! The Tathagata cannot be seen by the possession of marks. Why is that? What the Blessed One calls the possession of marks, that itself is the possession of no marks."

Thus, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Subhuti: "As far as there is possession of marks, it is deceptive. As far as there is possession of no marks, it is not deceptive. Thus, the Tathagata is to be seen by the possession of no marks."

수보리가 말했다: "아니옵니다, 세존이시여!" 세존께서 말씀하셨다: "마찬가지로 수보리야, 집착하지 않고 공덕을 베푸는 보살의 공덕의 축적량은 헤아릴 수 없다.

그러므로 수보리야, 보살은 집착하지 않고 공덕을 베풀어야 하며, 어떠한 표상에도 집착하지 않아야 한다. 어떻게 생각하는가? 수보리야, 여래는 형상으로 보아야 하는가? 수보리가 말했다: "아니옵니다, 세존이시여! 여래는 형상으로 보아야 하지 않습니다." 그 이유가 무엇인가? 세존께서 말씀하셨다: "여래가 형상으로 보이는 것은 실제로 형상이 없는 것이다."

세존께서 수보리에게 말씀하셨다: "형상이 있는 한, 그것은 허망하다. 형상이 없는 한, 그것은 허망하지 않다. 그러므로 형상은 형상이 아닌 것으로 여래를 보아야 한다."
